“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

— Mahatma Gandhi

In so many ways, New Mexico lives up to its motto as the Land of Enchantment, a magical place full of beauty and wonder. Against that backdrop, however, we see far too many animals in dire circumstances—neglected, abused, abandoned, discarded. We confront such conditions on a daily basis in many areas of the State; it’s nothing short of heartbreaking. We never look away.

We use the Sanctuary’s location — a gorgeous tract of land, almost 150 acres and located just 14 miles from downtown Santa Fe — and its several facilities to the direct benefit of some of the State’s most vulnerable populations. Every single day, we do everything we can to ensure that the animals both temporarily and permanently in our care are living their best lives possible.

We do not cage our animals; instead, we offer them habitats suitable to their proclivities. Our cats live in bunkhouses equipped with soft beds, scratching posts, napping spots and special places for bird watching and sunbathing. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens reside together in outdoor huts for warmth and safety; and our larger animals (the horses and goats) roam freely in open pastures.

On any given day, we care for 150 animals. Some are permanent residents, while others are recovering from illness or injury as they await adoption to a forever home.  We rescue from animal control euthanasia lists, overcrowded shelters, and concerned citizens who find animals in dire circumstances - puppies tossed in dumpsters or abandoned in boxes, wounded strays, starving horses, and discarded farm animals.

We are especially proud of our “Giant Dog House,” which you can only appreciate if you see it first hand. Restoring a dog's physical and emotional health requires considerable attention. Dogs entering the Sanctuary live freely among each other, enjoy healthy meals, and receive round-the-clock care.

If you live in NM, you can help support our mission simply by looking out for animals in need. Notify us. You may just save a life.
